Entertainment and Meaning; The so-called "Underlying Logic"#

2022-09-11 3 min read #Weekly Report

Introduction#

Unlike the Great Library, which functions to organize and archive various materials I have collected, Weekly Insights is a new section of the blog. Its purpose is to record what I have seen, thought, and learned throughout the week, and internalize it as my own knowledge through output.

The knowledge in notes does not belong to you. It only becomes your knowledge through digestion and application.

1. Banfo's Nonsense#

"For many people, the main purpose of rest and entertainment is to relax and relieve stress.

But society and the public always assign 'meaning' to human behavior.

Once entertainment is given 'meaning', it becomes a burden.

If you don't socialize, improve yourself, or create new experiences.

You will be defined as 'wasting time'.

But entertainment that 'doesn't waste time' is often 'exhausting'.

"Videos, games, books, movies, they are all the same.

'Meaning' becomes 'pressure'.

Therefore, you need to "waste time" to relieve stress.

So-called relaxation should be 'doing nothing'.

Thus, 'electronic impotence' emerged.

So, these videos of horseshoe trimming appeared."

They are the true spiritual health care.

(2) Moving Beyond the Belief in a Single Truth - From Abstract to Concrete#

The so-called integration is not about using the same set of principles to generalize everything. The more general the generalization, the further away it is from the essence. Integration is an opportunity for dialogue between different principles.

Recently, there have been many videos on Bilibili discussing "underlying logic" and "truth", and I always feel that something is not quite right.

If the rampant use of professional vocabulary and terminology by interns is just the tip of the iceberg in this industry, then the obsession with "methodology" and "underlying logic" is probably a common problem in the internet industry. There are too many smart people, and they are more willing to quickly understand various methodologies and underlying logics rather than engage in tedious execution. From this perspective, methodology is also a method with high ROI and quick goal achievement. As long as you know the underlying methodology, you can see through everything and be invincible.

Is it correct for us to study and discuss underlying logic?

Of course, it is correct. Learning underlying logic helps increase our macro understanding of a certain industry and clarifies "which direction to go". However, after clarifying the direction, "how to do better" should never be ignored. Excessive obsession with abstract "methodology" makes people arrogant, simplifying complex problems, and looking down on others. It also makes people unwilling to bend down and perceive the world.

As Xiang Biao mentioned in his book "Using Oneself as a Method":

I have always felt that theories have different ways of expression. There are tightly structured reasoning-type theories, and there is also a kind of exhibition-style, pictorial theory. Ethnography is a pictorial theory, built up by countless details, just like a huge mural. It cannot be condensed into a conclusion. If it is condensed into a conclusion, it will feel meaningless. It talks about common sense, but you have to see how the details behind it are unfolded.

Grand narratives simplify the whole world into a drama, but true greatness is found in micro-level practices.
